Basic Requirements

To begin IFR training, you must meet the following:

• At least 17 years of age

• Valid U.S. Driver’s License (or FAA medical as required)

• Private Pilot Certificate

• FAA Instrument Rating Knowledge Test (minimum passing score of 70%)

• FAA Instrument Practical Test (Checkride)

Flight Hour Requirements

Per FAR 61.65, the Instrument Rating requires:

• 40 hours of instrument time, including

  • One 250-nautical-mile dual cross-country under IFR

• 50 hours of Pilot-in-Command (PIC) cross-country time
